Meditations Games: June 30th

It all started in November 2018 when Jupi asked me if I’d be interested in a new project she’s doing with Rami Ismail. Given it was suppose to be a small game that takes no more than a few hours to develop, I was totally up for it.

What if every day, there was a small message from the past with a small game or toy to play with? Meditations is a launcher that, every day, loads a small game and an accompanying text as a meditation, distraction, lesson, or inspiration for that day.

Meditations Games were suppose to be a bunch of games made by a bunch of different devs. Each developer picked a date out of the whole year 2019 that is important to them, and then make a game about that day. Not a full game, but rather a short experience, a meditation. If you’re curious to learn more be sure to check the Who, Why, and FAQ sections on their website.

We’ve picked June 30th, Ewa’s birthday, and decided we’ll make a demo of her life-long secret project. The working title for it is Red Balloon, and the main theme behind the demo was “whatever it takes” - you can read more about her point of view on this in her blog post, when she publishes the piece of course.

I was hoping to learn Phaser 3 by the time I’ll start developing our Meditation, but I’ve ended up in the middle of transitioning from Phaser 2 to 3 with the Enclave Phaser Template. Thus, instead of only a couple of hours, I spent 2-3 days as I needed to constantly check the documentation and demos for most of the basic stuff since a lot has changed in the Phaser world.

We managed to finish the demo on time and submit for review. Given today’s June 30th, you can visit the meditations.games website to download the launcher for your system (Windows or MacOS), which will then download the demo itself and launch it using your own preferred browser. If this won’t work for any reason, you can play the exact same demo online.

It’s a simple creation, but we’re happy we’ve made it - last game we’ve released, Flood Escape, was out two years ago, and that’s way too long for “game development studio”. I hope we’ll be able to release some games in the near future, and the up-until-now Ewa’s super secret project will finally start to materialize.
